“It’s not about the birds.  It’s about what they represent to the human spirit.”  This is my response when asked why I paint birds. Throughout the millennia and across all cultures, the creatures of the sky are an enduring symbol. Whether representing deity in ancient Egypt, saved souls in Christian art, or symbols of freedom in cultures too many to count, birds seem to evoke a sense of awe, hope and intrigue in us.  It is my desire to capture this sense of intrigue by portraying birds with imagery that promotes contemplation. I do not seek to illustrate an idea, but to evoke inner thought.  By altering natural perspective, layering elements, and incorporating imagery that references the non-visual senses, it is my hope that the viewer experiences more than is seen on the surface of the panel.
